Sometimes the wind can be that fierce that I dare not get my easel out… yet alone on the jetty! So, painting in thy hand tends to happen.
This is the view of the sunset from nearer the lifeboat house, looking down Lytham Jetty out to sea.

Although the weather can be somewhat bracing over on the moors, a winter sun can make even the mist look stunning!

Down on Saint Annes Beach, looking left towards the pier and back up towards Lytham. I tend to be here when there is either a storm brewing, thunder clouds gathering and many’a kite surfer kicking about in the waves. Or, the sun is blinding and the contre jour effect sublime.
In either case, the pier tends to dissipate into the elements and a gleaming effect sprawls across the wet beach.

On the Jetty at Lytham. This is a view which I keep coming back to and it near always seems to be a toss-up between iridescent subtle hues and roaring storm clouds.
The sun however, does usually try to make an appearance.

Blinding! Absolutely blinding light... when it wasn’t engulfed in clouds that is.
Within the hour, a snowstorm was swallowing everything up but it was good fun trying to keep pace with the constant change in light.

The light here was stunning with the sun bursting through the clouds, when nearing the horizon line.
Previously, you could distinguish some of the fields by breaks in the snow from the reeds. Increasingly though as the sun set, light and snow fused together to create a stunning effect - a spectrum of both bright and muted light colours.
This was my first paint of the year, and a wonderful start to 2021 it was too!!!

The light was stunning up on the moors at Pickup Bank. Dusky pinks, pale blues and light bright yellow and oranges galore - there were a few grey clouds that swooped by, but the light and subtle colours illuminating their silhouette was incredible to try and capture.

When starting the initial sketching stage of this painting, I kept getting distracted by the light which was absolutely stunning, though changed the areas it illuminated with every blink of the eye. I barely got my initial ground down before everything went from being intense earthy colours, to almost chalk-like! Here’s to (alternative) lead white!!!

Following the snowstorms, the dusky skies which followed the snowstorms were an iridescent but subtle fusion of beautiful pinks and peaches, blues and purples.

Whilst I was painting, there was a lovely dappling of cloud, making it hard to distinguish between that and the snow on the uppermost part of Pendle Hill.
